Elton John and John Lennon’s Drug Binge: A Reflection

Elton John recently opened up about a drug binge with John Lennon that left him in a state of panic. In his new documentary, “Elton John: Never Too Late,” revealed at the Toronto International Film Festival, the iconic singer shared details of a wild night involving “mountains of coke coming out of [their] noses” in a New York City hotel room at 2 a.m.

During the drug-fueled evening, John admitted to feeling paranoid and even mistaking a knock at the door for the police. It wasn’t until he mustered up the courage to check the peephole that he realized it was actually Andy Warhol outside. Despite this revelation, Lennon allegedly still wanted to keep Warhol at bay due to his constant presence with a Polaroid camera that could document their drug use.

Although the encounter with Warhol provided a humorous anecdote, John has expressed deep regret over his past drug use. He has referred to taking drugs as his “biggest regret” but acknowledged that his journey to sobriety was filled with pain, bad behavior, and self-hatred. However, John successfully overcame his addiction and celebrated 30 years of sobriety in July 2020.

Reflecting on his sobriety milestone, John expressed gratitude for the support and inspiration he had received along the way. He credited seeking help 30 years ago as a life-saving decision, acknowledging that without intervention, he might have faced a much darker fate. In a candid Instagram post, he thanked those who had stood by him throughout his recovery journey.

In addition to his own sobriety journey, Elton John has also used his experiences to help others in the entertainment industry. He played a role in getting Rufus Wainright into rehab and even served as Eminem’s Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor. By sharing his story and offering support to fellow artists, John has become a mentor and role model for those struggling with addiction.

Through his honesty and vulnerability, Elton John’s reflections on his drug binge with John Lennon provide a glimpse into the darker moments of his past. However, his journey to sobriety and commitment to helping others serve as a reminder of the resilience and strength that can come from facing one’s demons head-on.
