The Support System Behind Kamala Harris’ Presidential Campaign

With Vice President Kamala Harris’ whirlwind bid for the White House, it seems that everyone in her inner circle is rallying behind her, including her husband’s ex-wife, Kerstin. Doug Emhoff, the second gentleman, recently joined a “Black Gay and Queer Men for Harris” call, where he expressed his unwavering commitment to ensuring their victory in the upcoming election. He acknowledged the challenges they face, stating, “They’re throwing the kitchen sink at you. My ex-wife is in the fight. Everyone’s in the fight. We have to protect [Harris], pray for her, and make sure she wins.”

In a show of solidarity, Kerstin, Doug’s ex-wife and mother to their children Cole and Ella, stepped up to defend Harris against derogatory comments made by Donald Trump’s VP pick, JD Vance. Vance had targeted Harris and other prominent female figures, labeling them as “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable in their own lives.” Kerstin vehemently rejected these attacks, citing Harris’ long-standing role as a co-parent in their blended family. She praised Harris as loving, nurturing, fiercely protective, and always present, emphasizing her integral role within their lives.

The controversy surrounding Vance’s comments escalated further when actress Jennifer Aniston weighed in, condemning his words and expressing hope that his daughter would not face such discriminatory rhetoric in the future. Vance, however, defended his remarks in an interview with Megyn Kelly, arguing that parenthood fundamentally alters one’s perspective. Despite facing backlash, Vance remained steadfast in his stance, refusing to retract his controversial statements.

In a display of unwavering support, various groups have organized virtual calls to bolster Harris’ campaign efforts. A recent “White Women for Harris” Zoom session, attended by notable figures such as Maria Shriver, Pink, and Connie Britton, drew a record 100,000 participants, causing the platform to crash. Inspired by the success of this event, subsequent calls were organized, including “Black Women for Harris” and “Black Men for Harris” sessions, each attracting high-profile guests like Don Lemon. These fundraising calls have proven to be instrumental in garnering financial support for Harris’ campaign, with millions raised to date.

Looking ahead, Michael Skolnik is spearheading a “White Dudes for Harris” call to further expand the network of supporters. The collective effort and diverse representation within these calls underscore a unified front backing Harris’ presidential aspirations. Amidst the fervor of campaign activities, Doug Emhoff remains steadfast in his concern for Harris’ well-being, demonstrating a balance between unwavering support and a recognition of the need for rest in the midst of a demanding campaign schedule.
